KEY POINTS

  • Luis Suarez left Atletico Madrid on June 1
  • Suarez netted 13 goals for Atletico last season
  • The Uruguayan forward has also played for Liverpool in the past

Former FC Barcelona star Luis Suarez is being linked with a surprising transfer move this summer. He is reportedly considering a move to Borussia Dortmund.

Suarez is currently without a club after he parted ways with Atletico Madrid in June.

Dortmund lost Erling Haaland to Manchester City earlier this summer window. The news of Dortmund striker Sebastien Haller's testicular cancer diagnosis came as a shock to the soccer world. The Bundesliga club is now without a top-level forward.

The Signal Iduna Park side is currently planning if they should sign a forward and if they do, Suarez is on their target list, Sky Sports reported.

Suarez's representatives got in touch with Dortmund's officials and offered their client, keeping in mind the requirements of both the club and the Uruguayan center-forward, according to Spanish outlet The SPORT.

It would be a great deal for Dortmund to sign Suarez, one of the greatest finishers in the game, on a short-term deal. It would benefit the player as well considering the FIFA World Cup is due to take place later this year in Qatar. Playing for Dortmund would also mean Suarez could play the reputed Champions League for one more season.

Meanwhile, Suarez has also been linked with his boyhood club Nacional, where he began his senior career before moving to Europe. The club's president is set to travel to Spain to speak with Suarez personally but securing the deal is going to be tough for Nacional as the Uruguayan club cannot match the player's salary demands, according to Marca.

The 35-year-old, who is in the final years of his career, netted 13 goals and provided three assists in 45 competitive appearances for Atletico Madrid last season.

Suarez ended his association with Barcelona on sour terms and moved to Atletico in the summer of 2020. In 32 league games, Suarez had scored 21 goals and three assists and played a key role when the Wanda Metropolitano club won the La Liga trophy.

The veteran striker had a fine run at Liverpool FC too, where he netted an incredible 82 goals and provided 46 assists in 133 appearances in all competitions, across four seasons.

In fact, in the 2013-14 season, Suarez scored 31 goals and 17 assists in 33 games and almost single-handedly took Liverpool so close to winning their maiden Premier League trophy. Unfortunately, the Reds fell short in the end as they finished two points behind champions Manchester City.
