In a horrific incident that took place in Istanbul, a man brutally killed a woman after she refused his marriage proposal. The man, who was already married, also chopped off the woman's ears and fingers.

Local media reported that the incident took place last week in a holiday rental apartment. Neighbors called the police after noticing a bad smell coming from the third-floor flat in the Bahcelievler district of the city. Police broke into the flat and found the woman's body under a pull-out sofa bed.

Authorities later identified the woman as 25-year-old Najia Arabzai, originally from Afghanistan, and determined that she was strangled. Police arrested a suspect, identified only as Zivar Gol R, 29, also from Afghanistan. The suspect was identified by a taxi driver who said he took him to the flat with a huge suitcase. Surveillance footage from the apartment showed a man carrying a huge suitcase, local media reported.

“I wanted to marry. I've learned that she's been in contact with others lately. Then I killed her as a result of the discussion," Zivar Gol R said during questioning.

It remains unclear if the man dismembered parts of his girlfriend's body before or after killing her.

During investigation, police found that the suspect was already married and was living with his wife in Istanbul. It remains unclear if the suspect was charged. Zivar Gol R is currently in police custody as the investigation is ongoing.

There have been several incidents around the world in the past where a man killed a woman for refusing marriage. In a similar case that took place in New Delhi, a man killed a married woman after she rejected his marriage proposal. The accused and the victim worked together at a shoe factory where the man allegedly fell in love with the woman. But she refused his proposal as she was married.

The man started following the woman and eventually stabbed her to death.
