A man in Southern California is now behind bars after police say he shot and killed the mother of his child during a custody exchange over the weekend.

The 30-year-old man is accused of shooting the 27-year-old woman in the head in front of Hawthorne Police Department on Sunday evening following an argument. Prior to the reported shooting, he is said to have taken their 17-month-old child inside the station.

Hawthorne police Lt. Jim Royer said, via KTLA, that the man then fled and drove off, but not before being shot at by an officer in the station. Still, he managed to get away and police searched for him for several hours.

Police Lt. Scott Hoaglund said in a news conference, reports the Springfield News-Sun, that he's "never seen anything like this before" in his 30 years with the department.
