KEY POINTS

  • Raheem Sterling is contracted with Man City until 2023
  • He moved from Liverpool to City in 2015
  • He has started only three league games this season

Manchester City have reportedly labeled Raheem Sterling with an asking price of $93 million.

Sterling, who is contracted with Manchester City until 2023, is believed to be nearing the end of his association with the Etihad club. The Premier League champions are looking to entertain offers for Sterling during the upcoming January window or next summer while FC Barcelona are one of the interested clubs, according to Spanish publication Marca.

Despite their financial crisis, Barcelona are looking into a deal for Sterling as the club is desperate to strengthen their attack following the departure of Lionel Messi. Considering their good relations with Manchester City’s boss Pep Guardiola, Barcelona are hoping to secure a loan deal for Sterling, according to the soccer website Teamtalk.

Following the recent Saudi takeover of Newcastle United, the Magpies have also been linked with Sterling as Manchester City are expecting an offer from them, as per Football365.

Sterling, who moved from Liverpool to Manchester City in the summer of 2015, has tasted much success under Guardiola at Etihad. However, the Englishman has fallen down in Guardiola’s pecking order as he has featured only in three of Man City’s starting XI out of eight matches in the Premier League this season.

While Guardiola recently said that he cannot guarantee any player a starting position, Sterling’s teammate Kevin de Bruyne said he can understand the former Liverpool forward’s current frustrations.

"Rotation is important because playing four competitions and mostly going far in them, it's a tough ask sometimes. I understand the frustration because I'm a player and you have some players who need more rhythm to get into it and maybe Raz [Sterling] is someone who needs more, I'm a player that needs that also. Sometimes it's tough to play one game yes, one game no," De Bruyne was quoted by ESPN, as saying ahead of City’s Champions League game against Club Brugge.

Sterling started in Man City’s previous Champions League game but failed to make an impact as his side ended up losing 2-0 to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).

"Obviously it's the manager who has to make choices and it's very hard. We have a group of 22, 23 internationals who are unbelievable. Whoever you pick, you will be right a lot of the time. Whenever the team plays good there's not a lot you can't say as a player," added De Bruyne.
