Manchester City are reportedly preparing a new lucrative contract for young forward Phil Foden.

Foden, an academy graduate of Manchester City, has been with the club since 2009 and over the years, he has become a vital part of Pep Guardiola's side.

The 22-year-old forward's current contract with City is until 2024 and the Premier League champions have already begun their work on extending his stay in the Etihad Stadium. City and Foden's representatives are now edging closer to reaching a final agreement. The new contract will see Foden's salary increase to $268,000 per week, reported soccer outlet Football Insider.

The new deal would also see Foden join Erling Haaland and Kevin de Bruyne to become one of Manchester City's highest-paid players, according to Sport Bible. Foden's new contract is expected to be around 6-year-long, meaning, the 22-year-old midfielder would have earned a whopping $84 million by the time the new contract comes to an end.

It is also understood that an agreement between City and Foden was reached a while ago, but the club has been delaying the official announcement.

Foden made his first-team debut with City in the 2017-18 season, when he failed to score a single goal. His best season with City came in the 2020-21 when he finished with 16 goals and 10 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions. He played a key role in City winning the Premier League title after they had missed out on the trophy the previous campaign.

In the ongoing season, the English midfielder has netted three goals for City and has provided two assists in 10 competitive matches.

Last month, Guardiola spoke about Foden's slow start to the season. "Phil has an incredible thing. Lately he is not playing so good like normal but he always does a job and run and fight and he's stable for the team. Phil's position is dynamic and [so is] his work ethic. We have to learn a lot. You can play badly because you are human but you never, never, never can avoid doing what Phil does every single game and that's why he deserves to play," the Spanish boss backed his talented midfielder.

Overall, Foden has made 179 competitive appearances for City, scoring 48 goals and providing 35 assists. At such a young age, Foden has already won many prestigious trophies with City, including four Premier League titles.

Foden is currently on international duty with Gareth Southgate's England national team, who recently got relegated from the top tier of the Nations League. That happened following their 1-0 loss to Italy at San Siro last week. The Three Lions are scheduled to play against Germany on Monday at Wembley in their final group game of the 2022-23 Nations League.

After the international break, Foden will join City for their derby clash with Manchester United at Etihad on Oct. 2.
