Manchester United will have to avoid defeat against FC Basel to qualify, after they were held 2-2 at Old Trafford by Benfica in the Uefa Champions League.

Benfica piled on the pressure from the start and had their reward within just three minutes. Phil Jones turned the ball into his own net, in attempt to clear Gaitan's cross from the right. The Portuguese side could have increased their lead had Bruno Cesar and Javi Garcia converted their chances.

Without Wayne Rooney, who was out with injury, Manchester United started with Dimitar Berbatov and the Bulgarian proved a point, getting to the end of a cross from Nani to nod in after half-an-hour.

As the game progressed, it was United who did the attacking, with Benfica desperately hacking clear at the back. Inevitably, United went ahead when Darren Fletcher got on the end of Evra's ball to tap in. However, Old Trafford's celebrations were silenced within seconds after poor defending saw Pablo Aimar to tap in after Rio Ferdinand failed to make the clearance.
