  • Wayne Rooney picks Mauricio Pochettino over Erik ten Hag as Manchester United boss
  • Pochettino and ten Hag have been linked to taking the job over the past months
  • Manchester United's success hinges on some things beyond a managerial change

Manchester United is in line to have a new long-term manager by the summer transfer window, and a club legend is making his thoughts on the matter very, very clear.

Wayne Rooney was vocal about his support for Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino being the main man at Old Trafford thanks to his prior experience in the English Premier League.

“I think (Mauricio) Pochettino has done it in the (English) Premier League, he knows the Premier League. At Tottenham, he brought a lot of young players through, at Southampton, he brought a lot of young players through as well,” the Derby County manager told Sky Sports.

“If I'm choosing between one of the two, that's who I'd choose, I'd go for (Mauricio) Pochettino and give him time. Managers now, they need time to come in and actually put their blueprint on the club and the team. If you gave him time, I think he'd do well. In my opinion, he's a top manager.”

The Red Devils’ search for a new manager is in its final stages as the club has fallen out of contention in all trophy-based competitions this season, with the club just aiming for a spot in next season’s edition of the UEFA Champions League if they finish in the top-four.

Pochettino and Erik ten Hag have long been linked to being the top-two candidates for Manchester United next season as both men’s experience in the upper echelons of the sport is seen by many as game-changing for the struggling club.

Ever since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson at the conclusion of the 2013 Premier League season, the team has been struggling to find a suitable replacement for him.

Noteworthy names like David Moyes, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer most recently have all had their hand in trying to rehabilitate the squad back to its former glory, but all failed.

With how impressive the competition has become in England’s top-flight league, Manchester United may need to take a step back and truly assess what they need out of a head coach and who the right players are for their future.

Both Pochettino and Ten Hag are more than worthy of being the Red Devils’ next manager, but the only question now is who upper management will decide to lead the team.
