  • Sources claim that Romero is now a target of new Premier League team Leeds United

Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is reportedly considering leaving the club after not being handed more playing time by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer despite David de Gea’s evident poor form, a report said.

Romero has been a significant presence for United, especially in cup competitions. This season, the star defender has appeared in all seven Europa League games under Solskjaer, tallying a total of 15 appearances for the Red Devils. Five of those were in the FA Cup.

Having a stellar record in international competitions, sources exclusively told Metro UK that Romero was also expecting to play ahead of under-fire teammate de Gea in the FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea last Sunday. According to insiders, Romero felt “really down” after learning that Solskjaer had picked the Spanish goalkeeper over him.

The Blues secured a 3-1 victory over United and officially qualified in the final against Arsenal. De Gea was heavily criticized after the defeat.

De Gea’s terrible error, which partly contributed to Chelsea securing its place in the final, reportedly added more frustrations for Romero.

Things got even more devastating as Romero was reportedly gearing up to replace de Gea once again in Wednesday’s 1-1 draw against West Ham. The Argentine defender was apparently relying heavily on Solskjaer’s words during his pre-match press conference, emphasizing that making “big calls” was part of his job.

However, the United boss did not deploy Romero inside the pitch. Following what seemed to have been reminiscent of the Chelsea defeat scenario, Romero felt “demoralized” and is now considering a move away from Old Trafford the report said.

Romero signed with United in 2015 from Sampdoria and has acted as a reliable stand-in to de Gea since. He has been one of the top performers for the Red Devils and has reportedly captured the attention of Premier League newcomers Leeds United.

According to Teamtalk, Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa is keen on making a move for his fellow Argentine ahead of their debut in the top-flight.

Leeds owner Andrea Radrizzani has confirmed that the club will spend as it returns to Premier League. The team has been linked to an array of top Argentine prospects, including Thiago Almada.

Previous reports claimed that Leeds has been monitoring Alamada’s situation, given he is also linked to some of the biggest clubs across Europe’s top five leagues. Almada, who has been dubbed by some as the “new Lionel Messi,” emerged as a top prospect along with the likes of Kai Havertz and Joelson Fernandes.
