  • Man Utd have already suffered four losses in the league

Manchester United forward Edinson Cavani has heaped praises on teammate Cristiano Ronaldo while sending a clear hint to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that he should play up front alongside the Portuguese skipper.

Cavani moved from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) to Old Trafford on a free transfer in the summer of 2020. In his maiden campaign with the Red Devils, Cavani managed to secure only 13 Premier League stars because of injury while he made further 13 appearances from the bench.

By accepting to extend his stay at Manchester United by another season, the Uruguayan would have expected to start more often in the underway season. However, with the arrival of Ronaldo, Cavani has returned to being on the bench. Out of his eight competitive appearances in the 2021-22 season, Cavani has started only twice while he is yet to play for the full 90 minutes in a game.

But, far from being jealous or annoyed with Ronaldo, Cavani only has admiration for his superstar teammate.

"It’s a pleasure not only for the fact that he’s a football star but also for the fact that I see the way he has to handle the brilliance of that star that he has forged in his career. And to see the way he faces each training day by day is a sincere pleasure. He is one of the great players that I have played with and that arouses admiration in me," Cavani was quoted by ESPN, as saying in a recent interview.

While Cavani has netted only one goal in eight matches, Ronaldo has scored nine times in 13 matches in the ongoing season for the Red Devils.

"You enjoy it and try to learn, follow him in things that you may think are perfect, and I try to enjoy it in the sense that football sometimes allows you to hang out with stars but does not let you enjoy them for different reasons," added Cavani.

A two-week international break is underway before the players return to their respective clubs for the busy winter months.

Placed sixth in the table, Manchester United are currently struggling in the league while Solskjaer is under immense pressure after a series of recent poor results. Their assignment post the international break is a trip to Watford in the Premier League on Nov. 20.

On the other hand, Cavani hopes that Solskjaer pairs him and Ronaldo together on the field for a positive outcome.

"The important thing in the team is to complement each other, they have already seen us together and I think that beautiful and positive things have come out. I’ve always said that the pitch is the one that speaks and one must be there to give the best, train every day to be 100 per cent. Hopefully, we can continue to share moments on the pitch and give victories to the fans of our team, Manchester United," the 34-year-old Cavani said further in the same interview.

However, Cavani is undergoing treatment for a tendon issue, because of which, he had earlier missed the Red Devils’ home clash with Manchester City. Solskjaer’s side ended up losing the game 2-0, their fourth loss of the Premier League season.
