  • Manchester United defender Luke Shaw opens up about his working relationship with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
  • Shaw believes that he unlocked his true potential under the watch of Solskjaer
  • Former Red Devils boss thinks he did everything he could during his time at Old Trafford

A Manchester United star may have just branded Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as the more effective manager than Jose Mourinho.

Luke Shaw is playing his eighth season with Manchester United, with the first six being under the tutelage of Mourinho.

However, according to the 25-year-old defender, it was only when Solskjaer stepped in as the new Red Devils boss that he maximized his full potential as a player.

“I don't want to come across like I was a little kid who could not deal with being put under pressure because at a big club like Manchester United, you are always going to be under pressure and under the spotlight,” Shaw recently told Sky Sports. “That makes you mentally stronger.”

“But I had no confidence at that time,” he continued. “I was losing my belief. I think that is what changed with Ole [Gunnar Solskjaer]. He managed me right and I got my confidence back and I am really enjoying it at the moment. Enjoyment and confidence. For me, they are the two biggest things you need on the pitch. You need that belief in your ability to perform at the highest level. I feel I have that now.”

Solskjaer is already in his second season as Manchester United’s head coach. The Norwegian has yet to bring home a single trophy to Old Trafford but managed to transform the Red Devils into serious title contenders this season.

Based on Shaw’s assessment, Solskjaer’s management style is “second to none,” strongly suggesting that he benefitted the most from the six-time Premier League champion's leadership.

“His man-management is second to none,” the Englishman raved of Solskjaer. “The way he conducts himself in terms of how he speaks to the players, it gets the best out of them. You can see that. He deals with situations perfectly in terms of what is needed, especially at a big club like Manchester United.”

“He takes the pressure off the lads and takes it all himself,” he continued. “Sometimes it is not fair because we are the ones on the pitch and we need to take our fair share too. For me, especially, from what I had before Ole came in, it is a total difference. It has pushed me to a new level.”

During Mourinho’s time with the Red Devils, the renowned manager managed to cop the Carabao Cup and Europa League titles in 2016-17, as well as the Community Shield in 2016.

However, the Portuguese didn’t have the same success in the English Premier League, Champions League and FA Cup.

To his defense, Mourinho insisted that he did “everything” he could and achieved what was “possible” at the time.

“The fans, they know that I gave everything that I could," Mourinho said of his time at Manchester United in October 2020. “I won what was possible to win, I didn’t win what was not possible to win. I gave everything, I gave my life to the club and my professionalism like I always do.”
