KEY POINTS

  • Cristiano Ronaldo wanted to leave Man Utd in the 2022 summer
  • Man Utd recently drew 1-1 against Chelsea
  • Ronaldo is now being linked with Chelsea ahead of January window

Manchester United are reportedly looking for a quick solution to the ongoing saga involving Cristiano Ronaldo.

Ronaldo recently was dropped from their squad for their trip to Chelsea after he had refused to come in as a substitute in their last week's Premier League game against Tottenham Hotspur. It was also understood the five-time Ballon d'Or winner was fined two weeks' wages for disrespecting boss Erik ten Hag's orders.

Subsequently, the Portuguese star received massive criticism for his actions. Manchester United and Ronaldo are expected to reach a solution for the drama in the next 48 hours, reported soccer outlet Sport Bible. However, International Business Times could not verify it independently.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo, who tried throughout the 2022 summer window to exit Manchester United, could be close to finally leaving the club. Chelsea could be his next destination as The Blues are preparing to offer the 37-year-old forward a short-term deal in January, reported Sunday World.

It was earlier reported Chelsea could not make a move for Ronaldo because of their then-boss Thomas Tuchel. Ronaldo was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge as the new club owner Todd Boehly was keen on signing the Manchester United superstar, and saw him as the ideal player to lead their weak attack.

However, Tuchel was against the move following his conversation with Ralf Rangnick, who was Manchester United's interim head coach then. Rangnick convinced Tuchel Ronaldo won't fit in well in his setup due to his disinterest in pressing the opposition.

With Tuchel gone and Graham Potter Chelsea's new boss, the Blues have revived their interest in Ronaldo, who could be offered a deal until the end of the 2022-23 campaign. The contract is expected to have the option for an extension into a second season if all parties are happy next summer.

Following the 1-1 draw at Chelsea, Manchester United have dropped to sixth place in the Premier League table with 20 points. But Ten Hag's side still has a game in hand. Their next game is against Sheriff in the Europa League at Old Trafford on Thursday (Oct. 27).
