KEY POINTS

  • Kieran Trippier is contracted with Atletico Madrid until 2023
  • He moved from Spurs to Atletico in 2019
  • He is currently with England in the Euros 2020

Atletico Madrid have reportedly turned down Manchester United’s opening bid for full-back Kieran Trippier in the current transfer window.

Trippier, who is contracted with Atletico Madrid until 2023, played a key role in his side winning the 2020-21 La Liga. Manchester United made a $48 million offer for Trippier, which has been rejected by the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium side, reported The Guardian.

Trippier is the international teammate of Jadon Sancho, another top target of Manchester United in the ongoing summer market.

The 30-year-old defender rose through the ranks of Manchester City, but never played for the club’s first team. After making appearances for Barnsley and Burnley, Trippier finally backed a big Premier League club when Tottenham Hotspur signed him in 2015. In four full seasons at the North London club, Trippier played 114 competitive matches, where the English full-back made contributions of 24 assists along with two goals as well.

In the summer of 2019, Tripper made a $28 million switch from Tottenham to Atletico Madrid. In the recently ended 2020-21 campaign, Trippier was available for a total of 28 league games. He played every minute of every league game he had featured in and helped Atletico Madrid to edge past Barcelona and Real Madrid to win the La Liga.

Tripper, who is currently with the England side in the Euros 2020, has been termed as a "defensive animal" by his national boss Gareth Southgate.

Southgate played Tripper as a left back in England’s 1-0 win over Croatia in their opening Euros 2020 game. It also marked the Three Lions’ first-ever victory in their Euros’ opening fixture, according to Sky News.

Trippier is one of Manchester United’s several targets this summer. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is still trying to land Sancho at Old Trafford. It was earlier reported that while Manchester United have agreed to personal terms with Sancho and also the fee demanded by the midfielder’s agents, Borussia Dortmund have rejected the Red Devils’ opening bid of around $95 million for Sancho. The English midfielder has been Solskjaer’s top target for over a year now.

Sancho has scored a total of 50 goals and set up 64 more in 137 matches, across all competitions, for Dortmund since his senior debut in 2017.
