KEY POINTS

  • Manchester United came from back to beat Omonia
  • Rashford scored twice and also assisted a goal
  • Man Utd's next game is against Everton in the Premier League

Marcus Rashford claimed a rare feat in Manchester United's latest win in the Europa League on Thursday.

Rashford was on the goal chart twice as Manchester United defeated Cypriot club Omonia 3-2 in an away fixture. The Cyprus club went 1-0 up in the 34th minute before the English forward and Anthony Martial rescued Erik ten Hag's side after coming off the bench.

The 24-year-old was involved in all three goals. While he scored two, he set up Martial's goal. By doing so, Rashford became the first Manchester United substitute to both score and assist in a Europa League match. It was the side's 47th game in the competition, according to Opta Sport.

Manchester United's last five goals have been scored by substitutes, which is a record for the Red Devils in the Premier League era (since 1992-93).

After the full-time whistle, substitutes Rashford and Martial received praise from their boss and teammates, including defender Diogo Dalot.

"[We made] very good subs, they made the difference today. I think what we want to build long-term is a squad. We are not [just] 11 players, we have a lot more quality on the bench and this shows to the manager that they want to play as well which I think is perfect for us. We want more of this, it will give us more as a team and for the future, I think it will benefit us," Dalot said, according to Man Utd's website.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag subtly criticized Jadon Sancho and Tyrell Malacia, whom he had subbed off at half-time.

In a post-match conference Thursday, reporters asked Ten Hag if he substituted Sancho and Malacia because they were at fault for Omonia's first goal.

The Red Devils boss replied, "It was not what I was unhappy with. It was the movement with our ball, the width on the left side, for me was no good first half. The movement from behind the defending line, so I hoped with Luke and Marcus we could get more effect from that, and in my opinion that happens."

Manchester United are second in the Europa League Group E table with six points, three less than leaders Real Sociedad.

The Red Devils' upcoming fixture is against Everton in the Premier League on Sunday. The match will be played in Merseyside at Goodison Park. Out of their four away league games this season, Manchester United have managed just two wins: against Southampton and Leicester. Their losses had come against Brentford and Manchester City.
