KEY POINTS

  • Man Utd defeated West Ham 1-0 in the league Sunday
  • Marcus Rashford scored the lone goal at Old Trafford
  • Man Utd will next take on Aston Villa in the league

Marcus Rashford has emulated legendary Wayne Rooney in a special Manchester United milestone.

Rashford scored in Manchester United's 1-0 win over West Ham in their Premier League meeting at Old Trafford on Sunday. With that, Rashford took his goals tally for the Red Devils to 100, becoming only the 22nd player to achieve the milestone for Manchester United.

The young English forward also was the first player to complete a century of goals for the Old Trafford side since Rooney did so in 2009, according to Opta Joe.

Rashford took 318 games to score 100 competitive goals for Manchester United. Only five other players scored quicker than Rashford. Rooney reached the milestone in his 242nd appearance for the Red Devils.

All the players who scored 100 or more goals for Manchester United have retired except Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo. In the list of the club's all-time scorers, Ronaldo stands seventh, having netted a total of 145 goals in 344 appearances across two stints.

Rooney, meanwhile, is the leading goal scorer for Manchester United – 253 goals in 559 matches in all competitions. He helped Manchester United win many trophies during his 13-year stay, including five Premier League titles – they won three of them in successive seasons from 2006 to 2009.

"100 goals for this special club! I've been here since I was 7 years old and came through every single age group and played on every single pitch so I want to thank all the staff, my family, and teammates that have helped make this achievement possible," wrote Rashford in a tweet.

The 25-year-old has started the 2022-23 campaign on a high, scoring seven goals and three assists in 15 matches for Manchester United across competitions.

After scoring the winner for the Red Devils on Sunday, Rashford said the current energy around the club has put him in a "better place" and he is "really motivated" right now.

"To be honest, it's a complete different energy around the whole club and the training ground. That for a start puts me in a better headspace and I just feel really motivated now. That's where I really struggled at times [last season]. More just mental things and not really my own performance. It was other things off the pitch and that's the biggest difference from this season," said Rashford, who is the club's leading scorer in the ongoing season.

After 12 games, Manchester United have 23 points and are placed fifth. They are one point behind fourth-placed Newcastle. But the Red Devils still have a game in hand.

Erik ten Hag and his team will next play against Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday before traveling to West Midlands to face off against Aston Villa on Sunday.
