Marseille secured a crucial first-leg lead against Inter Milan in the sides' UEFA Champions League last-16 tie through Andre Ayew's last-gasp header.

Ayew struck the dramatic winner at the Stade Vélodrome in the third minute of injury time to give Marseille a significant edge for the return meeting in Milan in three weeks time.

The result also further piles the pressure on Inter's beleaguered manager Claudio Ranieri, who has now presided over a run of four consecutive defeats and six in the club's last seven matches.

Inter's best chance of the game fell to midfielder Dejan Stankovic who could only shoot straight at Marseille keeper Steve Mandanda from only a few yards out.

Inter's wastefulness was to prove costly. With seconds remaining, Ayew escaped the attention of Inter defender Cristian Chivu to head home from Mathieu Valbuena's corner with the last touch of the game.
