“Matrix 4” has officially been confirmed. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss will be reprising their respective roles of Neo and Trinity. Details about the other cast members and new characters will be revealed after the script is ready.

Lana Wachowski will be writing the script and directing the fourth film in the franchise. Warner Bros. Pictures is getting back to the popular Sci-fi franchise after nearly two decades. The last film titled “Revolutions” was released way back in 2003.

Warner Bros. Picture Group chairman Toby Emmerich announced the return to the franchise, and the return of Reeves and Moss, on Tuesday, Variety reported. Emmerich shared his excitement for the project and praised Wachowski by saying that she is a “true visionary” and “creative” filmmaker.

Lana Wachowski co-wrote the scripts of the previous “Matrix” films and co-directed the films with Lilly Wachowski. She will now be joined by Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell in writing the script of the new film.

Warner Bros. Pictures and Village Roadshow Pictures will be involved in the production and distribution of “The Matrix 4” globally. They plan to start production late next year.

Details about the plot are currently being kept under wraps. There have been rumors that there will be a younger Morpheus in the film. The role was previously played by Laurence Fishburne.

Commenting on the announcement, Lana said that many of the ideas she explored with Lilly two decades ago are still relevant today. “ I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends,” the director said.

“The Matrix” recently celebrated the 20th anniversary recently. The film was also screened in select theatres last month as a part of the anniversary celebration.

A release date for “The Matrix 4” was not announced. More details may be revealed in the coming months.
