  • Middleton was surprised because she didn't expect anything from Prince Harry and Markle

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle remembered Kate Middleton's birthday and even sent the Duchess of Cambridge a surprise gift.

Middleton had a "low-key" celebration for her 39th birthday on Jan. 9. She celebrated it with her husband, Prince William, and three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex made sure that they were part of the future queen's birthday by sending her a thoughtful card and presents.

"It was a nice surprise," a source told Us Weekly. "Kate wasn’t expecting anything from the couple."

Prince William also showered his wife with presents. The second in line to the throne gave Middleton diamond and sapphire earrings.

Several outlets reported that there was beef between the Sussexes and the Cambridges. In fact, Prince William was reportedly very mad when Prince Harry and Markle announced that they would be stepping down from their royal roles. However, a year after Megxit, things were getting better between Princess Diana and Prince Charles' sons.

In fact, the two royal families were in touch during the holidays. Prince Harry and Markle were not able to join the royal family on Christmas and New Year’s Day because of travel restrictions in the U.K. Even if they were thousands of miles apart, they reportedly made sure to join the British royals online.

"There were phone and video calls over the Christmas and New Year holiday and the Sussexes sent presents to the Cambridges and vice versa," royal insider Katie Nicholl told Entertainment Tonight. "It was an opportunity in an otherwise very busy and chaotic year for both of the families to come together and connect, albeit virtually.”

Nicholl also confirmed that things were very different a year ago because the two dukes were barely on speaking terms. But then, things eventually worked out for all of them.

"Fast forward to today, the relationship is much better than it was," she continued. "For a start, they are on talking terms, and not only on talking terms, they do speak relatively regularly. They were very much in touch over the holidays. But there is an ocean between them, there is a time difference and as Harry [has] said… they are two brothers on different paths."
