The Los Angeles Angels have ensured that Mike Trout, the greatest baseball player of his generation, does not enter free agency at least until he is 40 years old by agreeing a 12-year $430 million contract with the center fielder. But is it the largest individual contract in sports history? In baseball yes, but across all sport? Forbes begs to differ.

The $430 million deal dwarfs the next best deal in baseball which was the $330 million over 13-years signed by Bryce Harper with the Philadelphia Phillies in February. Trout’s annual average salary of $36 million also beats the current record which is $34.4 million held by Zack Greinke.

Trout is considered the greatest player of the current generation with many claiming that even if he quits today, the center fielder is certain to be a first-ballot Baseball Hall of Famer. He has won the American League MVP twice and finished runners up on four occasions in his eight seasons with the Angels.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan claimed that Trout, who has slashed .307/.416/.573 with 240 home runs, 648 RBIs, 793 runs and 189 stolen bases thus far in his career, will sign the largest contract in professional sports history. But Forbes is claiming that his deal with the Angels will be second as boxer Floyd Mayweather earned $450 million from his deal with Showtime.

The 42-year-old boxer, who has a career 50-0 record, signed a deal with Showtime in 2013 that covered six fights over 30 months. The report claims that the minimum payout of the deal was $200 million, but his role as a promoter for the fights saw him cash in on the pay-per-view receipts of two major bouts against Saul Alvarez and Manny Pacquiao, which according to the report earned him $450 million over the 30-month period.

Canelo Alvarez’s deal with online streaming service DAZN is next on the list with the boxer earning $365 million over five years, covering 11 fights. The next two on the list are baseball players with Harper and Giancarlo Stanton, who signed a $325 million deal with the Miami Marlins rounding out the top five.

Trout’s career earning after agreeing his new deal with the Angels is expected to be around $515 million, according to Passan. The new contract, which is the largest in the history of team sports, will also replace the final two years of his existing deal with the Los Angeles franchise.
