Mike Trout is reportedly on the verge of signing a 12-year, $430 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. The extension will obliterate the recent $330 million deal Bryce Harper landed with the Philadelphia Phillies, easily making it the most lucrative contract in the history of professional sports.

According to ESPN’s Jeff Passan, the Angels are closing in on adding 10 years to Trout’s current deal, which expires at the end of the 2020 MLB season. The center fielder has two seasons left on his six-year, $144.5 million contract.

The extension would set multiple records. Not only will $430 million be more than any athlete has earned on one contract, but the average annual value of $35.83 million per season would be a new high for MLB players.

Zack Greinke holds the current record with a $34.4 million AAV.

There had been speculation that Trout would leave Los Angeles in two years, possibly for the Phillies. Trout grew up in southern New Jersey and hasn’t been shy about expressing his love for Philadelphia sports teams.

Trout is the consensus top player in baseball with historic production over his first seven full seasons. He’s won the AL MVP award twice to go along with four second-place finishes and a fourth-place finish.

Trout will turn 28 years old in August.
