Middleweight contender Julian “The Cuban Missle Crisis” Marquez made headlines over the weekend after winning his fight at UFC 258 and then proceeding to “shoot his shot” at singer-actress Miley Cyrus.

After rallying back to submit Maki Pitolo in the final round of their main card-opening bout, Marquez asked Cyrus to be his Valentine.

The invitation was able to reach the “Wrecking Ball” singer, and she responded with a peculiar request of her own.

Marquez issued an equally-peculiar counteroffer, which appeared to put an end to the little social media back-and-forth.

Thanks to a cryptic Instagram story from Cyrus, many people believe that Marquez’s henna tattoo proposal has caused him to blow his chance. It didn’t take long for the mixed martial arts (MMA) community to take to social media and issue their own reactions.

Marquez’s fumble was so epic that Daniel Cormier even talked about it on an episode of his podcast with MMA reporter Ariel Helwani.

“It was a blunder because now it’s over! It’s over now. She will not engage with him anymore, it’s over,” Cormier said emphatically. “If he would have put the ‘MC’ shave, she would have responded, she would have retweeted it, she would have talked about it.”

“This is the action of a guy that’s never had a girlfriend. I don’t think Julian Marquez has ever had a girlfriend in his life,” a disappointed Cormier continued.

While many may believe that Marquez missed out on a chance with one of the biggest celebrities in the world, there are some who say otherwise, like Kendra Lust, who co-hosts a podcast with Marquez.

Marquez, meanwhile, says that everything is going according to plan.

“Trust me, everything is going to work out the way you guys want it to work out. Everything is going the way it should go. For everyone saying I blew it, I think that’s hilarious because that’s not what it looks like on this side,” Marquez said in an interview with MMA Junkie.
