A brutal terrorist attack in an upscale shopping mall in Nairobi Saturday left scores dead or wounded, and the seige was still going on at the time of this writing. An estimated 10 to 15 al-Shabab gunmen entered the Westgate shopping mall around noon local time as a children’s day event was going on. The gunmen threw grenades and fired automatic weapons, allegedly targeting non-Muslims specifically, according to CBS News. Firefights between the gunmen and police occurred throughout Saturday, with the death toll rising to 59 and at least 175 wounded.

Firefights continued into Sunday with Kenyan military forces engaging the gunmen.

Responsibility for the attacks was claimed by the Somali al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-linked Islamic extremist group.

Meanwhile, 30 hostages still remain in the mall as the siege continues, according to CNN.
