NASA recently posted a few photographs taken with the help of high-powered telescopes aboard spacecraft circling the Earth.

Among them are the picturesque image of the jewel box, thousands of sparkling, young stars nestled within the giant nebula NGC 3603; the mesmerizing image of more-than-12-billion-year-old white dwarf stars in the Milky Way galaxy captured by the Hubble Space Telescope; and the terrific picture that shows the Thailand flooding taken aboard NASA's Terra satellite.

The images also show splendid shots of a young, red dwarf star surrounded by three planets; the interior of Mars' Newton Crater; the Carina Nebula (a collection of more than 14,000 stars); and the striking encounter between two galaxies.

Here is a compilation of remarkable photographs from NASA's image gallery that shows everything from ancient stars to an active stellar nursery containing thousands of young stars, developing protostars, and rarely visible swirling landscapes of stars that sometimes resembles North America and disappears abruptly.
