National Georgia Day is celebrated every year in the United States on Aug. 3 to highlight the state’s history, people, culture and food.

Georgia was the 13th colony and the 4th state to enter the Union. The state’s founder, James Oglethorpe, established the first permanent settlement in 1733 as a refuge for English debtors. Nine years later, he defeated Spanish invaders in the Battle of Bloody Marsh.

Georgia, which is the largest state in the southeast, is the biggest producer of paper and board, tufted textile products and processed chicken in the U.S. It also manufactures transportation equipment, food products, apparel and chemicals. It grows the most peanuts in the country too.

The state is known for its amazing tourist attractions, including the world's largest aquarium and beautiful beaches of Jekyll Island.

  • "I lived in Atlanta for a couple of years while getting my master’s at Georgia State. I thought I hated it at the time, but I’ve been back a couple of times since, and there’s no place I’ve lived to which returning is so much like visiting a place I only remember from my dreams." - David Liss
  • "I love David Bowie and Cher and Diana Ross. I wanted to follow in their footsteps. So I set out to do that in a rock-‘n’-roll band in Atlanta, Georgia. That led me to nightclubs and to the sort of Andy Warhol experience of creating a personality." - RuPaul
  • "Macon has such a rich musical history – and the state of Georgia, as well" - Jason Aldean
  • "My version of ‘Georgia’ became the state song of Georgia. That was a big thing for me, man. It really touched me. Here is a state that used to lynch people like me suddenly declaring my version of a song as its state song. That is touching." - Ray Charles
  • "I believe Georgia should aspire to nothing less than greatness. And I believe greatness is within our grasp." - Sonny Perdue
  • "I’ve come to realize how much it really was a part of my upbringing, the Georgia part. We were away from town. It was just dirt and trees and spouses. And a lot of kids – my cousins, who were all like brothers and sisters to me – just a lot of kids at one time." - Alice Smith
