  • Southgate's ENG are yet to win a game this season
  • FIFA World Cup is due to begin in Qatar in November

Liverpool FC captain Jordan Henderson has been added to Gareth Southgate's England squad for their upcoming Nations League fixtures.

Henderson was initially not included in the Three Lions' squad because of a hamstring injury. However, the midfielder has now recovered and joined the squad at St George's Park, reported BBC Sport.

The Liverpool skipper, who has joined Trent Alexander-Arnold in the England squad, has made good progress in his recovery and is all set to return to full training, according to the Reds' official website.

Henderson has come in as a replacement for Manchester City's Kalvin Phillips, who withdrew from England's squad over the weekend due to a shoulder problem. Keeping in mind the FIFA World Cup, which is due to begin in November in Qatar, the 34-year-old player was desperate for an England call-up, especially after he was rested from their Nations League matches in June.

England are scheduled to play against Italy at the San Siro in Milan on Sept. 23 and Germany at Wembley on Sept. 26 as a part of the 2022-23 Nations League.

It was earlier reported that Man City defender Phillips will be required to undergo shoulder surgery to regain full fitness for the World Cup. City boss Pep Guardiola also admitted that he had no choice but to send Phillip for the surgery.

Phillip's recurring shoulder injury has affected the player's availability in the ongoing campaign. Since his $51 million summer move from Leeds to City, the defensive midfielder has spent less than 20 minutes on the field for his new club this season.

Henderson has missed Liverpool's last three games after he suffered an injury during his side's 2-1 win against Newcastle United at Anfield on Aug. 31. Henderson, who has represented England's first-team 69 times, has made just one appearance for Southgate's side in 2022, which came in a 2-1 friendly victory over Switzerland at Wembley in March.

Meanwhile, England are yet to win a game in the ongoing season of the Nations League. They are a part of Group 3 of League A, which also includes Italy, Germany, and Hungary. With two losses and two draws, Southgate's England are at the bottom of the table.
