KEY POINTS

  • The Lakers, Clippers, Nets and Jazz are interested in Joe Johnson, a report says
  • Johnson could add experience and scoring to any NBA team bound for the playoffs
  • Johnson may prioritize winning an NBA title if he officially gets a call to play

With the NBA regular season reaching its penultimate stretch, free agents are eagerly in waiting. Several names are hoping for a chance to play in the playoffs, and one name that has been frequenting the rumor mill is Joe Johnson.

Despite being 39, pundits feel that Johnson could still be a credible player off the bench. In a previous report, the Milwaukee Bucks were singled out as a team that is considering the seven-time All-Star to fill up one of their open roster spots. But it appears they are not the only ones lurking.

There are several NBA teams considering Johnson, Brandon "Scoop B" Robinson reported. The teams Scoop B mentioned were the Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Brooklyn Nets and the Utah Jazz. International Business Times could not independently verify this information.

A reason pointed out behind this is Johnson’s showing at the USA Basketball Men’s AmeriCUp Qualifiers where he averaged 11 points, nine rebounds and 6.5 assists per game.

While he is a proven commodity, Johnson is expected to be a potential addition to boost the bench of any of the aforementioned teams. Experience and scoring are among the things most NBA teams are looking for, and the veteran player fits that need. But as for minutes on the floor, it would be best to lower expectations.

The Lakers do need some help, and Johnson would be sensible. The Nets could turn to Johnson for more scoring after the sudden retirement of LaMarcus Aldridge. Looking at the style of play of the Nets, Johnson is seen as a good fit.

With several NBA teams interested, it would not be surprising if Iso Joe would trim down his choices to the Lakers or the Nets. The Jazz and the Clippers are up there. But if there is something that Johnson may prefer, it would be higher odds of winning an NBA title.

Despite scarce minutes, Johnson will be an asset, especially when it comes to outside shooting and hitting the clutch shots. All the teams know what the 39-year-old can do so it will be interesting to see who among them would take the chance on the Big3 Most Valuable Player of 2019.
