New York Giants Rumors: Head Coaching Candidates Include Matt Rhule, Cowboys & Patriots Assistants
The New York Giants are looking for their fourth head coach in six years, having fired Pat Shurmur after two disappointing seasons. With three consecutive 11-plus loss seasons and Daniel Jones showing the potential to possibly become a franchise quarterback, the Giants have a lot on the line with their next hire.
Here’s a look at some of the candidates to become New York’s next head coach:
Matt Rhule
The Baylor head coach and New York native appears to be at the top of the Giants’ list. He was an assistant coach with New York in 2012 before heading to Temple, which was the first of two college programs that he’s turned around within the last six years. Rhule is in high demand, though there’s no guarantee he’ll jump to the pros. The 44-year-old turned down the New York Jets’ job a year ago and has reportedly declined to interview with the Cleveland Browns.
Mike McCarthy
McCarthy was also under consideration for the Jets’ head coaching vacancy last year. He took a season off after being fired by the Green Bay Packers, where he won a Super Bowl and made nine playoff appearances in 13 seasons. McCarthy reportedly interviewed with the Carolina Panthers and is a candidate for Cleveland.
Josh McDaniels
Like the previous two coaches, McDaniels will receive strong consideration for multiple job openings. The Giants might have gone with the New England Patriots’ offensive coordinator two years ago if they didn’t hire Shurmur. McDaniels went 11-17 as the Denver Broncos’ head coach from 2009-2010.
Kris Richard
The Dallas Cowboys’ defensive backs coach will reportedly get an interview with the Giants. He spent nearly a decade with the Seattle Seahawks as a coach for one of the league’s best defenses. The 40-year-old might need a new job soon with Jason Garrett unlikely to return to the Cowboys in 2020.
Eric Bienemy
Few offensive coordinators have had more success than Bienemy his two seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs led the NFL in scoring in 2018. Kansas City finished fifth this season, even as Patrick Mahomes missed nearly three full games with an injury. Bienemy has never been a head coach.
Don Martindale
Both Baltimore Ravens’ coordinators will be head coaching candidates in early 2020, and the Giants are reportedly trying to speak with the team’s top defensive coach. The Ravens have finished first and fourth in total defense in two seasons under Martindale. Martindale joined Baltimore as a linebackers coach in 2012 when the team won the Super Bowl.
