KEY POINTS

  • Shanahan may need to find a new quarterback for the 49ers
  • Garoppolo is likely done for the season as undergoing surgery seems to be his best option
  • Shanahan will utilize healthy players in their coming games

Jimmy Garoppolo of the San Francisco 49ers could be out for an extended period with a potentially season-ending ankle surgery among his options.

The 29-year-old quarterback suffered a high right ankle sprain, a whole new injury, and is expected to miss at least six weeks. This means that he could likely be out for the season.

Garoppolo sustained the injury in their loss to the Seattle Seahawks, 37-27, last Sunday. It was initially thought that he aggravated his recent ankle injury.

However, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan bared that it was an entirely new one and more serious compared to the one he suffered during Week 2 against the New York Jets, ESPN reported.

Now, Garoppolo needs to decide on what to do. He is seeking opinions before deciding if it would be best for him to undergo surgery.

If he ends up doing so, Shanahan will be left with no recourse but to shut him down for the rest of the season, the Associated Press reported.

“When you have those high ankle sprains, you re-injure them a lot. But it was a different way that he did it. So it’s basically doing it all over again in a different way...It is worse than the last one. That’s why surgery is an option. We’re getting different doctors’ opinions now. Whatever is best for him long term is obviously what we’ll decide on,” Shanahan said.

The injury woes are piling up for the 49ers. Aside from Garoppolo, tight end George Kittle is another player who will miss the rest of the season due to a broken foot. He will be out for eight weeks.

Looking at other players on the roster, there are also other names unavailable for the Niners. The list includes receiver Deebo Samuel (hamstring), running back Tevin Coleman (knee), and linebacker Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles (hamstring). All of them will be unavailable when San Francisco faces Green Bay this week.

As for Garoppolo, there are now a lot of questions in the air. With yet another injury threatening to cut his NFL season short, his future with the 49ers raises questions on his future with the team. A possible recourse is to explore the market for a quarterback.

One name that comes to mind is Matt Ryan. With the Atlanta Falcons in rebuild mode, there is the growing belief that Shanahan may try to lure the four-time Pro Bowler to San Francisco.
