KEY POINTS

  • Trey Lance's chances of starting for San Francisco depend on Garoppolo’s performance
  • Lance seems to have a good working relationship with Garoppolo
  • Garoppolo has to prove himself at the start of the next season

The San Francisco 49ers took in Trey Lance for a reason, and it will only be a matter of time before the 21-year-old becomes the team’s starting quarterback.

That could happen when the 2021-22 NFL season starts although all that hinges on their schedule.

For now, Jimmy Garoppolo remains the Niners starting quarterback barring any changes.

However, some recent revelations have led pundits to believe that Kyle Shanahan may be up to something.

In a previous post, it was mentioned how Shanahan considered making a move for Matthew Stafford before he was picked up by the Los Angeles Rams from the Detroit Lions.

Shanahan is aware of his talent, but the odd part is why the 49ers would be interested in taking in another quarterback.

Hence, it raises questions once more on the future of Garoppolo. The 29-year-old is in the final year of his deal with San Francisco, and NFL trade rumors have been suggested.

Considering he is owed $25 million, the wise bet is he will finish the season with the Niners and probably move after the coming season.

At some point, Lance is speculated to be San Francisco’s starting quarterback. This was stressed by 49ers beat reporter Matt Maiocco when he appeared on the Sports For All PH podcast with Filipino journalists Vincent Juico and Brian Yalung last July 2.

“It’s going to be Trey Lance. It’s just a matter of when they make that decision when to go with Trey Lance over Jimmy Garoppolo. It could be at the start of the season although that’s kind of unlikely. It could be at some point during the season if Garoppolo struggles or the team starts losing some games. It could be at the end of the season,” Maiocco explained.

There is no telling when that switch will happen, but a lot depends on how Garoppolo performs.

Lance is being mentored by the two-time Super Bowl champion and both appear to have a good working relationship.
