KEY POINTS

  • Montrezl Harrell is not buying the reason behind his playoff benching
  • Harrell is expected to get heavy interest from other teams
  • Harrell believes he should have been maximized during the postseason wars

Montrezl Harrell is more likely to end up with a new team this offseason, and the ex-NBA Sixth Man of the Year awardee will get his share of interest.

But as far as his last stint with the Los Angeles Lakers is concerned, the 27-year-old is unsurprisingly not happy.

Harrell hardly got to see action in the playoffs, and his size was singled out as the reason. But to him, it was just an excuse to bench him when he responded to fans on social media.

A screenshot of that was captured by a Twitter user who goes by the handle @HisandHerLakers.

When he was picked up by the Lakers last free agency, it was clear that he would be taking on a much smaller role.

With LeBron James and Anthony Davis around, his job was to provide muscle, collect rebounds and go for scrap points.

However, is efficiency could only be appreciated if he had playing time. At 6-foot-7, there is no question that Harrell was undersized.

Furthermore, he had to contend with Marc Gasol and then Andre Drummond, a late acquisition from the buyout market.

With the Lakers needing height, head coach Frank Vogel went with Davis, Drummond and Gasol upfront. That limited Harrell’s playing time in the postseason, where he only saw action for roughly just nine minutes a game managing only 5.8 points and 2.5 rebounds.

The frustration is somewhat justified as he had success with the Los Angeles Clippers in the previous season, where he defied the odds.

With the Clips in two seasons, Harrell averaged 12.9 points and 3.7 rebounds in 21.1 minutes of action.

Heading into the offseason, it appears Harrell would be better off joining a team where his talent can be maximized.

He owns a player option that would pay him $9.7 million for the 2021-22 season with the Lakers. But most feel that he is valued more than that.
