KEY POINTS

  • Garoppolo still has a long way to go for 49ers
  • Brady makes no sense over Garoppolo
  • San Francisco is progressing and most are overlooking it

The San Francisco 49ers continue to hear it from critics after bungling a golden opportunity to win the Super Bowl. And one player drawing a lot of heat is Jimmy Garoppolo. The 28-year-old has been hit for his indecisiveness earlier this month and the trolling continues.

Of course, Niners coach Kyle Shanahan has been getting his share of criticism as well. Most felt that pressure got to him, the same with Garoppolo. Looking ahead, most feel that chance could do San Francisco some good. But then again, most may have overlooked the fact that the 49ers are a team that went from nothing to something.

When Shanahan took over as coach back in 2017, most knew it would be a long process. It did not come in the second year but things took a surprise twist on the third. The 49ers were rolling and most were impressed. In fact, some felt that San Francisco would go all the way until they were stopped dead on their tracks by the Kansas City Chiefs.

Garoppolo came in back in 2017 but went through rough moments. That includes returning from an ACL injury suffered in 2018. He bounced back strong in 2019 and obviously has a lot of promise. Though he is a two-time Super Bowl champion (with the New England Patriots), it remains that actually quarterbacking in the big stage is different from being a reliever during his days with the Pats.

Shanahan is allegedly questioning the decision-making and ceiling of Garoppolo, NBC Sports reported. From a certain angle, it is understandable. Apparently, the 40-year-old coach is fully confident about what the 28-year-old can do. Unfortunately, that was not in full display at Super Bowl LIV. Moving forward, it would be foolish for the 49ers to give up on Garoppolo right now. Reaching the Super Bowl for the first time since 2012 is already an accomplishment and some may have been expecting too much.

With Tom Brady available, some are toying with the idea of seeing the 42-year-old over in San Francisco, SI.com reported. If that happens, he would be reunited with his former backup. But would it make sense? Also, Brady did not exactly perform well last NFL season. So taking him in and possibly replacing Garoppolo may not return favorable results.

Hard as it may be to accept, Super Bowl LIV is a learning experience for Garoppolo and Shanahan. San Francisco has succeeded in proving that they can play at a high level. The real challenge is for them to replicate the feat. If they fail, then perhaps critics and trolls can bash Shanahan, Garoppolo and the rest and demand for changes.
