Many fans were left heartbroken when Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder, better known to "The Vampire Diaries" fans as Elena and Damon, decided to end their romance in 2013. During an appearance on Dear Media’s “Not Skinny But Not Fate” podcast Monday, former co-star Claire Holt shared some details on how the former lovebirds handled their breakup.

Holt, who portrayed Rebekah Mikaelson on “The Vampire Diaries” and “The Originals,” said Dobrev and Somerhalder kept things "totally professional." Even after their infamous split, the ex-couple continued working together as their characters remained attached to each other until Dobrev left the show after the sixth season.

"I was on The Originals at that point so I don't know the timing. But honestly, they were really—they kept it super professional, it never got weird, like props to them,” Holt revealed during the podcast. “They did a great job at managing that. But it's hard, like for a lot of people it's really tough,” she added.

Initially, avid followers of Dobrev thought that her exit had something to do with her failed romantic relationship with Somerhalder. However, the actress later returned to the show for the finale and told E! News that she had left for other reasons.

At the time, Dobrev also clarified that she is happy to see Somerhalder get married to Nikki Reed in 2015. Somerhalder and Reed welcomed their daughter, Bodhi, in July 2017. They have maintained a good relationship with the “FAM” actress through the years.

In 2019, Dobrev also revealed that being friends with her ex-boyfriend and his wife is not “weird” at all, adding that everyone can be friends.

Meanwhile, Dobrev is currently dating American professional snowboarder Shaun White. An unidentified source Us Weekly recently that the couple is "very happy together" and it would not be surprising if they announce their engagement soon.

“Nina has had a lot of relationships not work out in the past, but ever since meeting Shaun, you can tell she’s just really excited about how far this relationship has come,” the tipster told the entertainment publication, adding: “They’re gradually taking steps to starting a future together.”
