KEY POINTS

  • Odell Beckham Jr. has a lucrative deal with Nike that’s reportedly worth $29 million for five years
  • He was traded by the New York Giants to the Cleveland Browns
  • OBJ has three Pro Bowl selections in his career

Odell Beckham Jr. is one of the more popular athletes in the NFL and he is also one of the highest paid in his position.

Beckham Jr. was traded to the Cleveland Browns by the team that drafted him in 2014, the New York Giants. He played as the wide receiver of the Giants for five years, earning a total of $31.8 million, including a $25.8 million signing bonus. In his two years in Cleveland, Beckham Jr. roughly received the same amount he received in his entire stay in New York. His pay for 2019 and 2020 totaled $31.2 million, which is part of the 5-year, $90 million deal he signed in 2019, a report from Spotrac revealed. Overall, in seven seasons, Beckham Jr. earned at least $63 million.

Fans were shocked to learn about the trade, after all the Giants made him the highest paid wide receiver in the NFL in 2018, seven months before he was shipped to Cleveland. When focused, he can turn any team to contenders. He was named Rookie of the Year in 2014 and also earned three Pro Bowl selections. According to Forbes, the 27-year-old holds the record for the fastest receiver to record 200 career receptions and 4,000 career receiving yards.

Aside from his football salary, OBJ makes money off sponsorship deals. As one of the most charismatic players in the league, he was signed by different brands such as Nike, Steiner Sports, Head & Shoulders, Dunkin Donuts, EA Sports, Foot Locker, ROAR sports drink and Lenovo, per Celebrity Net Worth.

His deal with Nike is reportedly worth at least $29 million for five years. As Bleacher Report claims, the deal could be worth as much as $48 million in eight years.

Being one of the more popular athletes in the NFL has its downsides, and those are off the field issues that superstars of OBJ’s level are drawn to. The former LSU stand-out is no stranger to making controversial comments either, which could probably factor in the decision of the Giants to sever ties with their franchise player.

In 2015, he figured in a clash with Josh Norman, resulting in suspensions. ESPN also recounted an incident where Beckham Jr. was photographed partying with Victor Cruz, Sterling Shepard and Roger Lewis just days away from the start of the playoffs. Critics connected his poor performance in his first playoff game that resulted in a loss to the sanctioned boat trip.

With $25 million net worth, OBJ is rich and famous but if he wants to become a NFL legend, he must prove that he can help the Browns achieve success. He still has a chance to prove his critics wrong but time is ticking for the wide receiver.
