An arrest warrant has been issued for Odell Beckham Jr. following the college football national championship game. The New Orleans Police department has alleged that the NFL player committed simple battery in LSU’s locker room Monday night.

A video shows Beckham slapping a police offer on the butt during the team’s post-game celebration. LSU defeated Clemson 42-25 in the Superdome to win the national title.

According to nola.com, authorities first tried to get a warrant for a misdemeanor sexual battery charge. A judge declined that request.

A charge of simple battery in Louisiana can result in a fine of no more than $1,000 and imprisonment for up to six months.

Beckham had already been the subject of controversy because of his actions on the field after the game. The Cleveland Browns’ wide receiver was seen handing LSU players cash when the contest ended.

“We are aware of the situation regarding Odell Beckham Jr. interacting with LSU student-athletes and others unaffiliated with the team following the championship game Monday night,” LSU said in a statement. “Initial information suggested bills that were exchanged were novelty bills. Information and footage reviewed since shows apparent cash may have also been given to LSU student-athletes.

“We were in contact with the NCAA and the SEC immediately upon learning of this situation in which some of our student-athletes may have been placed in a compromising position. We are working with our student-athletes, the NCAA and the SEC in order to rectify the situation.”
