Welcome a fresh fairy-tale character into the world of “Once Upon a Time.” Season 5 of the hit ABC drama is returning Sept. 27, and bringing along with it a “Brave” new face: Princess Merida.

Shooting of the forthcoming season just began July 8, but the series creators were able to deliver a special video to fans at San Diego Comic-Con Saturday. Titled “Archery Practice,” the clip brought fans into a beautiful wooded area. A girl in a long, blue, hooded cloak holds a bow and arrow, hitting a bullseye on a target. Her aim is so exact that her second arrow manages to split the first one right down the middle. After watching her perfect hit, the girl removes her hood -- revealing herself as Princess Merida, the Scottish princess in Disney/Pixar’s 2012 animated film, “Brave.”

Merida will be played by Scottish actress Amy Manson. Some may recognize her from her work on “Atlantis, ”Being Human” or “Torchwood.” She revealed through Twitter that she’s been keeping her casting news a secret for two weeks, and has already worked with two cast members. Manson also shared a photograph of herself with a bow and arrow, but said she started archery only after she found out that she landed the role.

In “Brave,” Princess Merida is the 16-year-old tomboy daughter of King Fergus and Queen Elinor. Merida’s mom wants her daughter to act like a royal lady, but the teen has other interests -- such as archery, horseback riding and sword-fighting. Their different views cause a rift between the mother and daughter that must be mended.

It’s unclear how Merida will factor into “Once Upon a Time” or whether she’ll even make her way to Storybrooke, Maine. But one thing is certain: The fairy-tale characters are going to need a new “Brave” face thanks to the Dark Swan.

“Once Upon a Time” Season 5 premieres on ABC Sunday, Sept. 27. What do you think of the casting news? Tweet your thoughts to @AmandaTVScoop.
