At least one person died and two others were injured after a gunman walked into a Church's Chicken restaurant in Otay Mesa, San Diego, California, on Wednesday evening and opened fire.

Police said the unidentified man walked into the restaurant located on Picador Boulevard and Del Sol Boulevard around 5.30 p.m. local time (8.30 p.m. EST) and opened fire before fleeing the scene. The suspect was described as a thin man wearing a sweater and red sunglasses. According to police, the suspect was turned away from the restaurant earlier in the day for trying to use a fake $100 bill to make a purchase.

Meanwhile, all the victims, confirmed as employees of the restaurant, were rushed to nearby hospitals where one of them, identified as a 28-year-old woman, succumbed to injuries. The condition of the other two victims was not known.

Speaking to local media, a witness said he was filling water jugs nearby when he heard the gunfire.

"I look around and that’s when I see the person firing inside the Church’s Chicken. He’s standing right behind the register firing at the employees,” the witness recalled. A police search was underway for the suspect.

This is a developing story.
