  • Blizzard introduces a new Overwatch hero named Echo
  • Echo has six distinct skills, highlighted by "Duplicate"
  • The character is only currently playable on the Overwatch PTR

A new hero is coming to “Overwatch,” and her abilities should make everyone excited to play.

On Thursday, March 19, Blizzard Entertainment announced the arrival of Echo, an advanced and “evolutionary robot” created by Dr. Mina Liao – a previously unrevealed founding member of the Overwatch group.

While Echo is no longer new to Overwatch players, having been included in the Overwatch 2 cinematic last year, it is the first time that her history, background and skills have been made public.

“Echo is a really special character for us in that our players have known about her for a very long time,” game director Jeff Kaplan said in their announcement before revealing that the character has been revealed way before the cinematic release.

“Players had actually seen Echo in earlier versions of the artwork for Overwatch. She was featured in the “Reunion” cinematic, where McCree frees her from the Deadlock Gang.”

As described by Blizzard, Echo has six distinct capabilities. Her primary attack is the Tri-Shot, which allows her to fire three shots at once in a triangular pattern. She can also produce Sticky Bombs that have a delayed detonation.

Moreover, Echo has the convenient Flight skill, allowing her to surge forward quickly and fly freely – making movement easier. It is also worth noting that she can actually glide while falling.

The new character’s Focusing Beam is especially noteworthy too, as it can deal with very high damage to targets with less than half a health. However, it can only be used for a few seconds.

Lastly, Echo’s ultimate ability is Duplicate. As the name suggests, it allows her to duplicate or copy an enemy hero and use their abilities. Per PC Gamer, the ability is not a disguise and Kaplan noted that there is a distinct difference between Echo and the duplicated enemy.

Unfortunately for gamers, they cannot use Echo in the game just yet. The character is only available on PTR or public test region as Blizzard will still assess how the character is used when released in the public. With that said, the developers can still make the necessary tweaks on Echo before deployment to the full game.

While Blizzard's Jeff Kaplan does not want to give us any hint about the release date of "Overwatch 2," it appears that a French retailer may have accidentally leaked it online already. Blizzard Entertainment
