Prince Harry was happy about returning to the U.K. and welcomed the opportunity to attempt to mend his strained relationship with his family, a report says.

The Duke of Sussex flew to England last month for the funeral of his grandfather Prince Philip, who passed away on April 9, and reunited with the royal family, including older brother Prince William, at the Duke of Edinburgh's funeral on April 17.

Despite the reported tension between him and the royal family following the Sussexes' March interview with Oprah Winfrey, Prince Harry was still glad that he was able to spend time in his home country and "wished he'd been able to stay a bit longer," an unnamed source told Entertainment Tonight.

After nine days in the U.K., Prince Harry returned to California and reunited with his heavily pregnant wife Meghan Markle, who advised against traveling by her doctors. The couple took the precautionary measure seriously as Markle suffered a miscarriage last year.

Despite reports of "frosty" interactions between him and some members of his family, Prince Harry welcomed the opportunity to reconnect with them, especially since he and Markle have not been able to return to the U.K. in over a year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the insider said. They had planned to split their time between the U.K. and North America when they announced their decision to quit royal duties last year.

The source told ET that the Duke of Sussex has been working with Prince William on the upcoming commemoration to Princess Diana, which is scheduled for July 1, or what would have been her 60th birthday. They are set to unveil a statue that they had commissioned for their late mother back in 2017 at Kensington Palace.

The two brothers "remain fully committed to carrying on Diana’s legacy jointly" despite the tensions caused by Prince Harry and Markle's bombshell revelations and claims, the insider explained.

Prince Harry was seen having a friendly chat with Prince William and Kate Middleton after Prince Philip's funeral at St. George's Chapel in Windsor Castle. According to the insider, he and Markle reached out to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge to congratulate them when they celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary Thursday.

Royal biographer Katie Nicholl earlier said that Middleton played a role in her husband and brother-in-law's friendly reunion.

"It's always been my understanding that behind the scenes, Kate has tried very hard to forge a rapprochement and act as a peacemaker between William and Harry," Nicholl said about Middleton.

"She loves Harry. She says that she is the sister that he never had. She has been heartbroken to see them fall out, and I think she is one of the few people, one of the few family members who would actually be able to push the brothers together, which she did in a very subtle way, but was very effective."
