Turns out rewards from the Plenti card might not be as plentiful as they seem.

The reward program -- which offers both a credit card version from American Express and a free rewards card -- is advertised as a multi-retailer card that helps you free up your key ring and wallet. All reward programs have their perks and weaknesses, but NBC News reports that while Plenti points can be earned at hundreds of location, there are only a few that redeem the rewards.

Four, to be precise.

Plenti cards can be used at brick-and-mortar stores such as AT&T, Enterprise and Nationwide and "hundreds" of online retailers through its online store. However, only Macy's, Exxon, Mobil and Rite Aid locations allow a customer to redeem earned points, pretty much undermining the point of the card.

American Express said the program is not intended to be misleading and that more retailers should be announced by the end of the year.

"You’ll be able to use points at checkout with certain Plenti partners once you have finished sign-up and your balance reaches 200 points or more," Plenti explains in its FAQ. "You can use Plenti points toward savings at Macy’s, Rite Aid and participating Exxon and Mobil stations. For every 1000 points you earn, you can look forward to at least $10 of savings. At checkout, simply present your Plenti rewards card and follow the instructions. Or, if you don’t have your card, you’ll need to enter your PIN when giving your phone number to use points at checkout."

The average household belongs to 21 loyalty and reward programs, but shoppers generally use less than half of the programs to which they belong, according to one study. Apps such as Key Ring have attempted to ease customers' loyalty cards by combined the cards into a mobile app. Other loyalty programs have skipped the physical cards altogether and opted to go straight to mobile apps.

Even if you remember to carry and use your rewards card, there are other obstacles, such as how you redeem your points or getting ridiculously long receipts.

Despite confusion over where to redeem points, some couponers are excited about the new program, while others are more skeptical about its potential.
