KEY POINTS

  • Patrick Mahomes leads the quarterback rankings after Week 1
  • Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers and Josh Allen follow Mahomes in the standings
  • Big movers following Week 1 feature Carson Wentz, Kirk Cousins and Tua Tagovailoa

The 2022 NFL season descended quickly into madness as fans were witness to great opening week games, and it was almost a foregone conclusion to see Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes lead the pack in positional rankings.

CBS Sports released their first quarterback rankings of the season and Mahomes was at the top of the list followed by Tom Brady, Aaron Rodgers, Josh Allen and Justin Herbert to round out the top five.

"We figured No. 15 would be just fine without Tyreek Hill. We didn't count on him being... better? For any flak he gets regarding his freewheeling style, Mahomes sure is automatic as a point guard at the position, too. He could take a week off and still lead the NFL in touchdown passes," Cody Benjamin wrote.

Mahomes had a massive outing in Week 1 against the Arizona Cardinals after throwing for 360 yards on 30-of-39 attempts which turned into five touchdowns, leading the Chiefs to a 44-21 victory.

The Cardinals' defense simply had no answer for the flamethrower that was Mahomes and the Chiefs' offense in this one as quarterback Kyler Murray put up 193 passing yards on 22-of-34 attempts alongside two touchdowns.

The Chiefs had also just defeated the no. 5-ranked quarterback Herbert and his Los Angeles Chargers in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football but in a much closer game than Week 1.

On their list, the players to get the biggest jump up the standings were the Washington Commanders' Carson Wentz (plus-6), the Minnesota Vikings' Kirk Cousins (plus-4), and the Miami Dolphins' Tua Tagovailoa (+3).

Wentz led the Commanders in making the right step forward as they soundly defeated the Jacksonville Jaguars, 28-22, after putting up 313 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions.

The Vikings surprisingly upended Rodgers' Green Bay Packers in the season-opening matchup after practically shutting them out 23-7 thanks to Cousins' 277 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions.

As for Tagovailoa, he again captained the Dolphins to a 20-7 victory over the New England Patriots for the second straight season, dissecting Bill Belichick's defense to the tune of 270 yards and a single touchdown.

The quarterbacks outside of the top five are as follows:

6. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens

7. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals

8. Russell Wilson, Denver Broncos

9. Kirk Cousins, Minnesota Vikings

10. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams

It will be interesting to see how the rankings will change going into Week 2 as some teams are pegged for Monday Night Football (Buffalo Bills versus Tennessee Titans, Philadelphia Eagles versus Vikings) on September 19, while the others are on track for Sunday, September 18.
