A mentally challenged 12-year-old girl was gang-raped in the small East Indian town of Jehanabad by a principal and three teachers, police announced Monday. The girl was reported in critical condition and was being treated at the Patna Medica College and Hospital in Patna.

The victim was not a student but was visiting the school because her mother was a physical education teacher there. She was allegedly attacked Sunday by Kako Secondary School Principal Aju Ahmed and teachers Abdul Bari, Md Shakaut and Atul Rahman. The four were not immediately arrested and authorities were working to find them.

The suspects had taken her to the Bihar school building roof where the crime occurred. She was eventually discovered in a “disheveled” state on the roof by her mother, Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) P K Srivastava said.

Her mother filed the complaint. She said her daughter was mentally unstable and would accompany her at the school because there was nobody at their household to take care of her. Her mother began searching for her daughter when she was missing after a certain amount of time and found her in a poor condition on the rooftop.

At the time of the attack, the girl's mother was teaching classes, Hindustan Times reported.

“As my daughter’s condition worsened and the bleeding did not stop, I took her to Patna by train and admitted her at the Patna Medical College and Hospital. She was referred to the maternity ward after the emergency ward did not accept her case,” her mother said.

A First Information Report — a report that commences criminal proceedings was officially filed against the four who allegedly committed the act, said Kusum Bharti, house officer of a Jehanabad police station.

“Prima facie, the incident appears true and raids are on to arrest the culprits,” Bharti said.
