  • Mayoral claims Zidane wanted him to stay at Santiago Bernabeu
  • Jovic tenure with Los Indios on thin ice
  • Mayoral wanted loan for chance to play and improve

Borja Mayoral is officially with Roma but the 23-year-old revealed that he had to take a difficult route. According to him, Zinedine Zidane wanted to keep him at Real Madrid CF and planned to sell Luka Jovic instead.

Mayoral is no stranger to being loaned out to other clubs. The Spanish striker is coming off a two-year loan with Levante. During that spell, he scored 14 goals in 19 appearances across all competitions. He returned to Real at the start of the season as a substitute. He played two league games before being shipped out to Roma on loan.

However, Mayoral revealed during a press conference where he was officially introduced that Zidane urged him to stay with Los Indios. Zidane wanted Mayoral to act as an understudy to Karim Benzema.

Despite this, he made a call to Zizou's office and asked if he could leave. He feels he can get more opportunities to play and improve if he would be sent out on loan, Marca reported.

"After doing pre-season [preparations] with Real Madrid, I was going to leave the club quickly, but Zidane wanted me to stay," Mayoral said. "I told him I had to leave to get more opportunities.

According to Goal, Roma paid €2 million ($2.35 million) to Real to get Mayoral. The agreement includes a purchase option that ranges roughly €15 million ($17.6 million) in 2021 and €20 million ($23.4 million) the following year.

It was a startling revelation for most though it does put a bit of pressure on the part of Jovic. The 22-year-old striker is said to be under the radar with his lackluster showing. He was only good for two goals in 27 appearances last season, AS reported.

Hence, the best Jovic can do right now is to prove his worth with Los Indios. He saw extensive minutes against Levante and showed signs of improvement. However, he needs to find the net if he is to get on the good side of Zidane. Jovic is expected to get his chance with Real Madrid this season. It could potentially be his last chance considering Zidane has other options if the Serbian fails to impress.
