KEY POINTS

  • Sage Northcutt is banking on his team to guide him in his return to ONE Championship
  • He will be facing Ahmed Mujtaba in his first fight since May 2019
  • The former UFC standout is eager to pick up where he left off

Sage Northcutt can finally heave a huge sigh of relief as he now has a definite date for his return to action.

The 26-year-old native of Katy, Texas is set to take on Ahmed Mujtaba of Pakistan in one of the feature matches scheduled for ONE Fight Night 10 on May 5th—the promotion's much-awaited debut on American shores.

The former UFC standout has been sitting on the sidelines for four years due to health-related concerns that prevented him from stepping inside the cage.

It all began with his heartbreaking defeat at the hands of Cosmo Alexandre at ONE: Enter The Dragon in his May 2019 promotional debut, where he found himself on the receiving end of a vicious 29-second knockout.

Unfortunately for Northcutt, the blow from Alexandre's knockout punch resulted in eight facial fractures that required prompt surgical repair.

As he was about to report for duty again at ONE on TNT 4 in April 2021 against Japanese legend Shinya Aoki, lingering COVID-19 effects forced him to withdraw from the bout.

This coming May, Northcutt will have a shot at gathering the pieces together of what started as a promising mixed martial arts career.

Going through his ordeal was no easy feat, but Northcutt conceded that he could have not done it without his loving wife, Amanda.

"Having someone that's there to support you and that's what you look for, that's what you want. That's always a great feeling, for one thing, just having someone. If you can have someone that's on the same page as you, that's awesome, too," he said in a recent interview.

"So, I think marrying the right person, there are so many great things you can go on for days about it. There's a lot of great things from it."

As he expects to have some share of the spotlight at ONE Fight Night 10, the pressure to perform at the highest level feels more bearable for Northcutt with his stablemates at Team Alpha Male around him.

"All I can say is I'm surrounded by an incredible team at Team Alpha Male, some of the best fighters. It's great in all aspects–great wrestlers, great grapplers, great strikers, along with great coaches," he stated.

"I'm stepping into the gym every single day. It's like a fight every day."

Northcutt has been a member of Urijah Faber's Team Alpha Male since 2017, and he believes that the world-renowned band of fighters can guide him on his comeback trail.

"I'm with a great team, great coaches. Urijah Faber and all the coaches at Team Alpha Male are awesome, so I'm just improving everything," he stressed.

"I feel like I've improved in a lot of different areas. I'm looking forward to showing it."

ONE Fight Night 10 is set to take place at the 1stBank Center in Broomfield, Colorado, with a flyweight world title trilogy encounter between Demetrious Johnson and Adriano Moraes serving as the main event.

Fight fans in the United States will get to watch the aforementioned live event through Prime Video.
