KEY POINTS

  • Salma Hayek joins fans in social distancing
  • The actress suported social distancing in an Instagram post
  • Many people are not taking the threat of COVID-19 seriously

Salma Hayek shared a positive message for people across the country who are staying inside and avoiding crowds. Social distancing is one of the measures being advocated to stop the spread of the coronavirus COVID-19.

Staying isolated at home is a challenge that not many people are comfortable with. Hayek shared a message for such people on her Instagram page. The actress said that most people are doing their best by staying indoors and distancing themselves, and she added that everyone is doing this together and thinking about the people “who are most vulnerable.”

In the post, Hayek shared a photo of her sitting in the balcony. She shared the same message in Spanish for her fans.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has been recommending social distancing as a measure to control the spread of COVID-19, USA Today reported. However, social media posts of large crowds gathering at places like restaurants, gym, and Disney World suggests that not everyone is taking the spread of the disease seriously and this has led to outrage.

One of the reasons why people are ignoring the recommendation of professionals is because they feel that the COVID-19 isn’t such a big threat as it is being made out to be. According to Cynthia Mohr, who is a professor of psychology at Portland State University, the reason why people are not taking this disease seriously is because there was similar concern about SARS and H1N1, but people managed to get through at that time. The people are not realizing the threat posed by this new disease because of their experience.

Celebrities like Hayek supporting social distancing should help spread awareness about the issue. The actress has been using her fame to support important social issues. She previously joined the fight of Mexican women against feminicide on International Women’s Day.
