The 2019 US Open just kicked off, and the first night of the tennis Grand Slam already has everyone buzzing about a very specific match.

Serena Williams, who’s currently ranked at number eight in the world, is set to go up against Maria Sharapova, who’s now number 87 in the world after returning to the game following both a suspension and injuries.

The two have come across each other 22 times since 2004, with Williams winning 19 of those matches and Sharapova nabbing just three wins — two in 2004 and one last year, by default, after Williams retired from the French Open, just before the match was set to start, due to an injury.

Despite the excitement over this first-round pairing, it could turn out to be a quick match, as not only has Williams beat Sharapova 19 times but 16 of those times were in straight sets. In just a few hours, tennis fans will find out how this latest head-to-head between the players will turn out.
