Grammy Award-winning singer Sam Smith made the personal decision on Friday morning to announce that they will be changing their pronouns to they/them. Smith's announcement came in the form of an Instagram post which outlined the road that they took when it came to making the choice to publicly reveal how they would like to be referred to moving forward.

"After a lifetime of being at war with my gender I've decided to embrace who I am, inside and out," the "Dancing With A Stranger" singer wrote, adding, "I'm so excited and privileged to be surrounded by people that support me in this decision."

Fans of the musician may not be surprised by the choice as Smith came out as gender nonbinary in March of this year when speaking with Jameela Jamil in one of her "I Weigh" Interviews. When asked by the host what the term nonbinary meant to them, Smith replied, "You are a mixture of all different things, you are your own special creation. That's how I take it."

In the aforementioned post on Friday, Smith also said that while they still feel they are not at a "stage just yet to eloquently speak at length about what it means to be non binary" they "can't wait for the day" that they are. "So for now I just want to be VISIBLE and open," the "Stay With Me" singer then added.
