Sophie, Countess of Wessex, faced a shocking PR scandal two years into her marriage with Prince Edward.

Sophie is one of the respectable members of the royal family. She was reportedly Queen Elizabeth II’s favorite royal. However, she found herself at a center of a PR scandal shortly after she officially joined the Firm, Woman’s Day reported.

Countess Sophie met with Mazher Mahmoud, a News of the World reporter pretending to be a sheik. According to royal correspondent Emily Andrews, Mazher wanted to employ Sophie’s PR firm, so they met a number of occasions and the royal let down her guard during their meetings. In fact, she was being “indiscreet.”

Their conversations were recorded and she was caught making eyebrow-raising remarks about former British Prime Minister Tony Blair and his wife Cheerie.

“She said the Royal Family didn't like him because he was too presidential,” reported Richard Kay, Daily Mail editor.

Sophie also made “unflattering remarks” about William Hauge who was the leader of the opposition at the time. She also commented about Camilla Parker Bowles saying that the public would not like her to be Queen.

When the scandal hit the tabloid, Countess Sophie decided to step down from as head of her PR company and decided to be a “working royal”. She also issued a statement to apologize to the Queen.

“I am deeply distressed by the carrying out of an entrapment operation on me and my business but I also much regret my own misjudgment in succumbing to that subterfuge,” she wrote. “This has been a difficult time for me. I take very seriously the issues raised and, naturally, regret any embarrassment above all to the Queen.”

It’s been almost two decades since Sophie made the major blunder, and she has already proven herself to be a valuable member of the royal family.

Sophie has developed a good relationship with the other members of the royal family. In January, she and Prince Edward joined Prince William and Kate Middleton for a special reception at the Buckingham Palace weeks after Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided to quit as senior members of the royal family. According to energy reader Allison Ward, Middleton let her guard down with Sophie.
