The S&P 500 Index rose 1 percent on Thursday, led by financial stocks, after encouraging U.S. manufacturing data and a rebound in Chinese stocks reassured investors that the economy is on a road to recovery.

The Dow Jones industrial average <.DJI> was up 68.54 points, or 0.74 percent, at 9,347.70. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.SPX> was up 10.02 points, or 1.01 percent, at 1,006.48. The Nasdaq Composite Index <.IXIC> was up 18.14 points, or 0.92 percent, at 1,987.38.
