KEY POINTS

  • Stephen Strasburg has signed a record $245 million contract with the Washington Nationals
  • The right-hander is currently worth $60 million
  • He has earned over $110 million to this point in his career

Stephen Strasburg now owns the record for the largest-ever contract signed by a pitcher thanks to his new $245 million pact with the Washington Nationals, but how much has he already earned in his career and what is his net worth?

Strasburg signed his first professional contract in 2009 after being selected first overall by the Nats. That deal was worth a total of $15.1 million over the course of four years including signing bonuses. He broke the record for a contract for a draftee with that deal, shattering the $10.5 million given to Mark Prior in 2001.

The hard-throwing righty saw his salary grow over the course of the next seven years before inking a massive seven-year $175 million contract extension in 2016. That saw his pay jump from $7.4 million in 2015 to $10.4 million the next season.

That pact included an opt-out clause after the 2019 season, which Strasburg elected to take. According to Spotrac, his career earnings as of the end of this year is $110,346,428 when salary, incentives and signing bonuses are included.

The latest contract signed by Strasburg is worth $35 million per season although that does not include incentive payments. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports he will earn an extra $500k for an MVP award, $250k for finishing second in the voting, $150k for third, $100k for fourth, $75k for fifth and the same breakdown for the Cy Young award.

Furthermore, Strasburg will get an additional $250k for a World Series MVP award, $100k for an All-Star selection, $100k for a Gold Glove and $100k for any Silver Slugger award earned. The contract also includes a full no-trade clause for the pitcher.

By the end of Strasburg’s latest deal, not including incentives, the Washington National will have earned $361,774,996 in his career. Let’s not forget this may not be his final contract. But how much is he worth right now?

According to Celebrity Net Worth, Stephen Strasburg is currently worth $60 million. Strasburg is, incredibly, only the second-best starting pitcher who was available as a free agent this offseason with Gerrit Cole being the blue-chip player.

Industry experts unanimously agree that Cole will get more money than Strasburg for the 2020 MLB season. With the defending World Series MVP receiving a record-breaking deal, Cole should shatter this new record.
