  • Manchester United are set to take on Omonia on Thursday
  • Anthony Martial netted 2 goals in their 6-3 loss to Man City
  • Martial has been at Man Utd since the 2015-16 season

Erik ten Hag's latest comments have hinted that Manchester United could offer a contract extension to Anthony Martial.

Martial's current contract with Manchester United is until 2024, which also includes an option to extend by a year. Seven games into the Premier League season, Martial has bagged only 75 minutes of play, but Ten Hag has hinted the Frenchman is very much in his plans.

"We are happy he's back. But we will take it careful, step by step, in the process to bring him back. He [has] played now almost a half, so 35 minutes, which is good, and now we have to extend that. But [we will do that] from game to game, and we have a lot of games to cover," Ten Hag told reporters, according to Man Utd's media.

The Dutch manager's comments came on the eve of Manchester United's Europa League fixture against Cypriot club Omonia, meaning Martial is expected to feature in the starting XI on Thursday.

Last season, Martial did not appear to meet the Red Devils' requirements and as a result, he was loaned off to Sevilla.

However, with the change of management, Martial has begun to revive his career at Old Trafford. At the beginning of the 2022-23 season, he was struck by a hamstring injury and Achilles Irritation that saw him miss nine fixtures, but the French forward returned to action in style.

Even though Manchester United lost 6-3 to Man City at Etihad, two out of those three Red Devils' goals were scored by Martial, who came off the bench. Apart from the two goals, Martial has also provided an assist in two competitive appearances for his side in the ongoing campaign.

Meanwhile, Martial, who had an impressive pre-season, will sign an extension with Manchester United provided he is assured that he would get to play regularly, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano, who has a credible record in European soccer.

"Some fans were surprised to see Cristiano Ronaldo staying on the bench for this game, and Martial preferred by Erik ten Hag, but it's been the case for some time now that the new manager has been keen to give the Frenchman a chance to show what he can do. Of course, before progressing on a new contract, Martial wants to make sure to have enough game time and this will be the key point," Romano wrote in a column for CaughtOffside.

Martial, who moved from AS Monaco to Manchester United in the summer of 2015, has scored 81 goals and provided 51 assists in 271 competitive matches for the Premier League club.
