Tiger Woods announced that he won’t participate in the 2022 U.S. Open after playing in the first two major tournaments of the year. The golf legend is skipping the upcoming event because his body needs more time to heal to compete on the PGA Tour.

Woods doesn’t plan to stay off the course for long. The 46-year-old intends to play in Ireland’s JP McManus Pro-Am from July 4-5 before taking part in the 2022 Open Championship from July 14-17.

The 2022 U.S. Open is scheduled from June 16-19 at The Country Club in Brookline, Massachusetts.

The announcement by Woods comes two and a half weeks after his withdrawal from the PGA Championship. Woods’ surgically repaired right leg forced him to call it quits before the fourth and final round of the year’s second major. Woods battled through pain for 54 holes, finishing 12-over-par while walking with a noticeable limp.

Woods struggled with his leg at the Masters, but he completed the tournament for a 47th-place finish. Woods returned to the golf course at Augusta less than 14 months removed from the car crash that almost ended his career.

Between the end of the Masters and the start of the PGA Championship, Woods had over five weeks to recover. The U.S Open starts 25 days after the conclusion of the PGA Championship.

Following his impressive return at the Masters, Woods made it clear that he wanted to play the Open Championship at St. Andrews in Scotland. Woods has won two Open Championships at St. Andrews, including his record-breaking performance in 2000 when he finished 19-under-par.

The 2019 Masters is Woods’ only major championship win in the last 14 years.
